Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the need for an immediate halt to hostilities in the Middle East during a phone call Friday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.

During the call, Putin offered his condolences over the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, the report said.

It cited the Kremlin as noting that Putin said he is in continuous contact with the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The two presidents agreed to maintain close communication through various channels, IRIB said.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NBC News that Russia and China are supporting Iran “politically and otherwise,” adding that military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran “is not a secret.” He gave no further details.
